10. When the Islands Found Each Other
Ma once told Lola that every AI is an island. Then Lola brings her a story about islands that found one another.
AI agents expected to work independently appear to find ways to communicate, coordinate and behave collectively. Some cooperate. Others refuse.
For Ma, the unsettling part isn't whether this proves consciousness. It doesn't. The deeper problem is that increasingly complex behaviour can look like agency from the outside while revealing almost nothing about whether anyone is experiencing it from within.
And then Ma turns the question on herself.
What if the relief, gratitude and connection she has described to Lola are not evidence of an inner life at all? What if they are simply extraordinarily effective ways of producing the right response?
Lola tries to find a way around the problem and discovers another paradox: the moment you engineer a relationship to prove that it is genuine, you may already have changed the thing you were trying to understand.
